The Third place medicine show

Third Place

/THard/ number – each of three equal parts. Number three finisher in a race.

/plās/ noun – a portion of space available or designated for or being used by someone or a group.

-A public space separate from home (first place) and work/school (second place) that encourages informal social gatherings, conversation, entertainment and community building. Easily accessible, welcoming to all, comfortable, informal and has “regulars” who help set the mood.

Medicine Show

/medəs(ə)n/ noun – the science or practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illness. A spell, charm or fetish believed to have healing, protective or other power.

/SHō/ verb – allow or cause (something) to be visible. A spectacle or display, typically an impressive one. A play or other stage performance, especially musical.

-Typically refers to traveling troupes that used entertainment (music, comedy) to sell “miracle” cures, salves and ointments. Entertainment featuring musicians, actors, dancers and other performers who also sold dubious “cures” like snake oil and love charms. Mostly helped spread music, art and culture across rural areas and paved the way for sponsored radio shows.
